Cultural Diversity
RFHC's service area is not without cultural clashes, especially as it transitions from a majority of African Americans (80% in the 1970's) to over 50% Latino in the last 30 years. Pacific Islanders have also grown to 12% of the population. The cultural changes are still working their way through the community, and the effects are felt daily at the RFHC. The importance of understanding cultural differences is reflected in our staff training and community outreach. All of RFHC's providers are bilingual in Spanish except one. In addition, 85% of RFHC employees are bilingual in English and Spanish or Tongan.

  • RFHC incorporates in its protocols the cultural values, practices, and language of the racial/ethnic groups being served
  • Use of multi-lingual health workers to translate and explain services and benefits to mono-lingual immigrant families
  • Development of language/culturally specific promotional materials that are pilot tested for linguistic, cultural and literacy levels
  • Collaborative relationships with ethnic and culturally-based organizations serving people of color
