Health Disparities are Real
No population in San Mateo County is more susceptible to health risks than the predominantly African American, Hispanic, and Pacific Islander population that RFHC serves.
- In East Palo Alto, last year's California Physical Fitness Test of 5th graders at Ravenswood City School District found that close to 50% were overweight or at risk.
- Given the rise in obesity, San Mateo County's Public Health Officer reports that 1 in 3 Americans born in 2000 will develop diabetes at some point. If you are African American, Latino or a Pacific Islander, your risk increases to 1 in 2.
- Teen pregnancy is highest among Latino adolescents: 1 birth for every 11 Latinas
- African Americans make up 12% of the County population and 24% of asthma deaths, and have a 31% greater rate for asthma attacks than whites.
- SMC Community Needs Assessment reported 61% of those living below 200% of poverty had no dental insurance, rising to 70% among the Latinos.
- African American women are more likely to die of breast cancer than any other ethnic group.
- Death from heart disease is 29% higher among African Americans than whites, and death from stroke is 30% higher.
- Incidence of cervical cancer is almost three times higher among Latino women than whites
- 1 in 4 black women over 55 has diabetes, nearly twice the rate of white women.
