Funding Overview

RFHC’s budget in 2010 was $10.7 million and growing with a diverse source of funding.

  • Government grants
  • Public health insurance reimbursements for services
  • Charitable foundations
  • Contributions from individuals and the private sector
  • Fees collected from patients and their insurers

The Challenge

Community health centers are being squeezed between the rising number of uninsured workers, and declining government health coverage reimbursements. Ravenswood is no exception. We have seen an increase of 45% in the number of patients who depend on us for care. Meanwhile, reimbursements are declining. There is a growing gap between the cost of the care we provide and the payment we receive for that care.

The Cost of Uncompensated Care

In 2010, we provided over 20,000 medical visits for the uninsured.
Over 64% of our patients have no regular health insurance coverage.
RFHC does receive limited reimbursement for some visits for specific services such as prenatal, well child, family planning, and cancer detection.  But there are many uncompensated costs.

  • 20,000 medical visits per year for uninsured
  • Uninsured pharmacy: $565,542
  • Uninsured lab costs: $31,682
  • Uninsured dental care: $890,000 estimated for new dental services

Uninsured patients do pay a sliding fee based their annual household income.
Fees range from a minimum amount of $20 to $50 per visit.

In 2010 RFHC collected $101,155 from sliding fees—representing just over 2% of net patient revenues .
