Christina and Ramon drive two hours to work every day. They
grew up in East Palo Alto, but like many young families they
went all the way to Stockton to buy their first home.
They are both busy from the moment they arrive. As the Front
Desk Supervisor, Christina starts her day briefing the Patient
Services Assistants on assignments and the day's schedule.
No two days are ever alike, except that every day is busy
and there's always the unexpected.
As a supervisor, Christina is on the "Optimizing Primary
Care" Team. RFHC is part of the national Health Disparities
Collaborative's big push to improve efficiency and clinic
management. One objective is to reduce patient wait time and
ensure that any patient that needs an appointment that day
is seen. What happens at the front desk is critical to the
process.
For his part, Ramon is responsible for getting the Mobile
Clinic out to the scheduled site. When he's not driving the
van, he becomes the jack-of-all maintenance assignments, appearing
first at one site and then another, fixing, repairing, hanging
white boards, bolting bookcases to the wall or picking up
a printing order.
When the mobile clinic goes out every Thursday afternoon
to provide health care to the homeless, he doubles as an outreach
worker. Being from the community, people trust him and listen
when he recommends that they take time for a medical check
up.
The more capable you are, the more people rely on you and
so both of them are called upon often. They do get away sometimes.
They take their boat to a lake, get out on the quiet water
and go fishing with their sons.
